The Best Time to Post on Instagram According to… 

All of the information we have in this section is related to different online sources that have looked into the issue of the best time to post on Instagram. You’ll notice that many of them are third-party services that help you with your Instagram management and workflow.

Hootsuite is one of the most respected information sources when it comes to all things Instagram, but their data was surprisingly limited or out of date when it came to the best time to post on Instagram. The same could be said for Buffer and Coschedule, which was quite surprising. 

Later 

Later’s August 2021 report offers some extremely valuable information about the best time to post on Instagram, with a study of some 35 million posts (not including Reels and IGTV, boo). 

Here’s what they found: 

  • Best time of day: 3am – 6am
  • Best day: Sunday 
  • Best day and time: Sunday at 6am
  • Worst day: Wednesday and Thursday 

Wow, so has anyone else sprinted off to set their alarm? These times are so early! How is that possible?

The whole idea from Later is that businesses need to post when their audience is the most active on Instagram, which is generally between 9am-1pm. The problem with this is that there is so much competition at that time, it’s harder to get noticed. 

By posting earlier, you’re more likely to be seen by your followers when they open the app, leading to more engagement and a favorable performance against the algorithm that will give you higher ranking. 

It’s a great idea— posting a bit earlier will ensure that you didn’t miss out on anything and that users see your content during one of their first scrolls of the day on IG!

SproutSocial 

Sprout Social offers their take on the best time to post on Instagram through their study of more than 20k of their users’ IG accounts. They have a different strategy than later and abide by the notion that you should post exactly during the window of activity from your followers. 

  • Best time of day: 11am-12pm
  • Best day: Tuesday
  • Best day and time: Tues 11am-2pm 
  • Worst day: Sunday  

 

One interesting thing we can see from Sprout Social is that as we move through the weekend, engagement is lower in the evening as opposed to weeknights, when it’s some of the strongest between 6-9pm. 

Also, engagement begins the earliest on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday! 

 

ExpertVoice 

The information on the best time to post on Instagram from ExpertVoice has a bit of its own flow, but aligns more with Later’s data and strategy than Sprout Social. 

There isn’t a clear source of where ExpertVoice got their information, and the only image with a source is from Latergramme, which turned into Later around 2016. For that reason, we are not sure exactly how up-to-date or accurate this information is. 

  • Best time of day: 9am-5pm
  • Best day: Wednesday
  • Best day and time: Weds 5am, 11am, 3pm 
  • Worst day: Monday

As you can see, the best time of day that they have listed is also very general— it would be tough to nail down a true best time to post on Instagram from that information. 

Here is a day-by-day breakdown for the best time to post on Instagram from ExpertVoice:  

Hootsuite 

Although Hootsuite is one of the leaders when it comes to providing the best info on all things Instagram, there wasn’t any accessible recent information rooted in data. There is, however, some general information on the matter.

Hootsuite says that overall, Wednesday is the best time to post on Instagram, at around 11am. They align more closely to Sprout Social’s stance that you should be posting when there are the most users online and engagement is at its peak. 

In addition, it shows times that are best for their particular Instagram audience: 

  • 8am – 12pm 
  • 4pm – 5pm 

This is more or less the peak times of wakeup and lunch/leaving work of those on the west coast and east coast.
